Evaluate and refine a 19-session, full semester S.T.E.A.M.-based, Port education class in Spring 2015 as part of a Year-Round YDA. The program will introduce students to Port activities and the Port’s place in the Wilmington community. Through a series of hands-on exercises, field trips, and guest speakers, this course will immerse students in Port functioning, environmental mitigation, teamwork, and Port careers with a focus on developing S.T.E.A.M. based principles and skills. The first part of the course will engage students through a series of hand-on exercises designed to familiarize them with various aspects of Port operations. Students will work in teams to construct a model bridge (which they will test for strength), a model crane (including cantilever), and finally a 3 ft. by 2 ft. model of the Port. Students will present their model Ports at a Port commissioners meeting to showcase skills acquired and knowledge gained through this course.Students will take a field trip to the Port to see how the S.T.E.A.M. principles they examined in the classroom apply in a real-world setting. They will speak directly with a crane operator to see how the crane functions, comparing the knowledge with lessons learned in the completion of their models. Students will also speak with Port engineers about the Port’s environmental impact on the ocean and Wilmington community and ways that the Port works to mitigate its effect. Avalon High School sits directly on a trucking route, so this is a particularly relevant topic as students are exposed to this aspect of Port functioning on a daily basis.
